how to choose the perfect location for your photo session
Do you want your engagement photos to reflect you and your relationship? Here’s what I recommend. Rather than me just giving you a list of beautiful local locations (because locations and accessibility of them can change over time, and you want this to be personal, too!) Here is what I will say. Think about what you two like to do as a couple. What do you share, what do you connect over?
What I’m saying here is that there is no one right place to take these pictures, but there are places that hold your energy, hold cherished memories, and mean something to you. And if you really are looking for specific spots, there is a list of my favorites at the end of this blog post.
I once had a couple who chose their location at Castle Island because they often run there together at sunrise. Usually they go and get coffee at a local place after, so that’s what we did! At sunrise (to avoid crowds). Because the owner of the coffee shop knew them as regulars, she gave them a whole plate of donuts to enjoy during their photo session at the shop. My couple really enjoyed themselves and we all had a great time. The photos are adorable and so THEM.
You don’t have to choose any specific location yourself if you don’t want to - but if you have an idea of the type of location that you want, I can help you pick a specific location. Something I really love is turning what seem to be ordinary locations into really fun and kind of editorial concepts.
I believe that if you pick a location that you already feel comfortable in, your real selves are going to shine through in the images even more. The goal is to relax and have fun, and it’s much easier to do that in an environment that you actually like.
The main takeaway here is that there aren’t many wrong answers for where to have your photo session, though I can tell you what to avoid.
Where not to have your photo session:
locations that are extremely crowded with other people (sometimes if we go for sunrise or off-times we can overcome this problem)
locations that aren’t clean or are littered with trash
locations that are unsafe, icy, have a lot of mosquitos or ticks, or are too precarious
Some of my favorite (no permit required) New england locations:
Singing Beach (MA)
Harkness Memorial State Park (CT)
Maudslay State Park (MA)
Borderland State Park (MA)
Elizabeth Park (CT)
Castle Island (MA)
Beavertail State Park & Lighthouse (RI)
Gillette Castle (CT)
Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MA)
For a city vibe, or a restaurant/bar shoot, the big cities have a lot of good spots.
