how to get more candid photos in your wedding gallery
Let’s get right into it. I’m going to give you three tips for getting more candid photos.
1) A GOOD FIT: Choose a photographer who is a good fit and who you feel like you can get along with. Their emotion and feelings towards you will affect how they photograph the day! You should feel like you can be yourself around them - and if they feel comfortable around you too, they’ll definitely do some of their best work.
Questions to interview your photographer with or information to gather:
What is your approach to photographing weddings?
How would you describe yourself?
How would you describe your photography style?
Can you share a full gallery as an example?
2) TIMELINE: Build in extra “buffer” time in between events.. You won’t be enjoying yourself if you are super stressed about adhering to an unrealistic timeline, and there won’t be time for having fun in the “in-between” moments. Real smiles come from real interactions!
how to build a sensible timeline that allows for candid photos:
Get input from your photographer or a wedding planner on your timeline.
Ask your friends and family what they regret not making time for on their wedding day.
Okay this is a big one. But if you want a lot of candids, I recommend hiring a photographer for at least 8 hours. And maybe if you have a lot of guests, ask if you can add a second photographer, too!
3) MOTTO: Remember that your day is not about the photos, the photos are about your day! Stressing over how the photos will look if XYZ were to happen won’t really help you enjoy the moment. As long as you’re confident in your venue’s rain plan, and your photographer’s commitment to capturing big and small moments, you’ll be sure to have many cherished memories to look back on.
